It was, to say the least, a magical show at the First Canadian Place when Justin Hines stopped by on July 29.
The stage was nothing fancy, a few acoustic instruments, some soft white lights, and a FCP poster in the background. The waterfall, which normally sprays liquid to the sky, was (obviously) turned off, and people began gathering on it, around it, and behind it to catch a glimpse of the always-smiling Hines.
This show would mark Justin’s third time at the FCP. Sound check kicked off as planned for 11:30 a.m. and he already had quite a few people to warm up in front of it. With passerbys stopping to watch him and a few dedicated fans (some traveling all the way from British Columbia) camped out beside the stage, it looked like the show was going to be a good one.
With a set list to last him for a mere half an hour, Justin sang fan favs like “Say What You Will,” “Courage” and “April on the Ground.”
The diversity among the audience was incredible. There was the young, young at heart, and those battling their own challenges out for lunch watching the singer/songwriter. Many painted their faces with an expression of “awe” and wonder as soon as he opened his mouth, a beautiful sight to see.
However, I think fans will say the meet and greet session at HMV was their favourite part of the afternoon. After the show finished, Justin raced over to the shop to snap photos, sign CDs and talk with new and old fans.
His quick wit and naturally friendly personality kept the mood of the day nothing short of amazing. It is one thing to listen to his album, but to see him live is a whole different experience. He brings an energy and a sincerity so rarely found in an artist today.
